Guatemala will support the sectors affected by drought


    The National Council for Food and Nutritional Security (CONASAN) held its second extraordinary meeting, in which Minister Mario Méndez Montenegro presented the Support Plan for farm families affected by the prolonged heat.

    The families affected by the Canicula could receive food rations for 90 days, so the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) analyzed request a budget expansion for Q300 million (40 million dollars).

    The departments most affected by this phenomenon are: Jutiapa, Chiquimula, El Progreso, Zacapa, Guatemala, Quiché, Retalhuleu, Baja Verapaz and Suchitepéquez, Quetzaltenango, San Marcos, Jalapa, Huehuetenango, Sololá, Totonicapán, Santa Rosa, Escuintla, and Petén.

    In addition, he pointed out that the National Extension System works on the final verification of damages and characterization of those affected, based on two profiles, which will receive rations of food and inputs for agricultural production and irrigation.

    During the plenary session, CONASAN stated that they will make suggestions to mayors of affected municipalities to raise awareness and redirect the budget not executed to date to irrigation projects and resilience to climate variability. This with the objective is to promote comprehensive attention by local governments and the central government.
