The Construction Industry in Costa Rica shows recovery

In June 2018 the economic activity of Costa Rica, measured by the trend cycle of the Index

Monthly Economic Activity (IMAE) showed a year-on-year growth of 4.2%.

In the first semester of 2018, the average rate of change was 3.6%, while the accumulated rate of the last 12 months was 3.1%.

The significant recovery of construction stands out in June, a phenomenon that is present since March. In particular, it is observed after ten months of a sustained contraction that this activity takes a strong impulse due to the advance in works for commercial use and business offices.

The construction registered a variation of 13.5%, which implied a recovery of 19.3 percentage points (p.p.) in June 2018, with respect to the same month of the previous year.

The behavior of the construction sector with private destiny mainly obeyed to the advance observed in non-residential works. Both commercial activity and industrial ships also influenced, although to a lesser extent, the infrastructure done for the urbanizations and parking.

This behavior is in line with what was observed in the import reports of materials construction and in the commercialization of inputs for this particular activity.

    Public construction

The growth of construction with public destiny during this month was associated; basically, to educational infrastructure projects (MEP trust) and works of improvement of the aqueduct and sewerage system in the metropolitan area, Limón, Puntarenas and Guanacaste
